We had another busy week at the Day house! We have tried several new foods over the past few weeks, I just haven't had time to post or I didn't get a picture of it. Lets see...Broccoli, Yellow Squash, Blueberries, Green Peas, and latest Spaghetti noodles! They weren't quite sure what to do with them (we had extra after making our dinner so we thought we would give it a try!)
Also this week we have been "sleep training" or whatever you want to call it. The babies started sleeping through the night at 4 months or so but once we started teething that went right out the window...at least for Sara Beth. Mahlon is our sleeper. He can sleep 9-11 hours at night and take 2 2hour naps during the day. Sara Beth on the other hand HATES nap time, goes down easily at night, but only sleeps for 6-7 hours (this puts her waking up at 3 or 4 am!!) We always rushed in when she started crying to keep her from waking Mahlon up. It is much easier to get one crabby baby back to sleep at 3 am than 2 crabby babies! So we spoiled her and she got used to us running in to shove a paci in her mouth. (or as Wesley calls it a "plug"!)
Anyway after several nights in a row of getting up multiple times a night we decided to let her "cry it out." Now let me explain myself...I have heard of doing this, but had done zero research on the protocol. Apparently you are supposed to let them cry for a few minutes, go check on them, tell them you love them...etc...but don't pick them up. Then wait 5-10 minutes more and repeat and eventually they fall asleep. Then the next night you wait 10-15 minutes and so on and by the 3rd or 4th night they are sleeping all night. Well that is for the birds!!! Who wants to get up that many times in the middle of the night. OK so most parents might, we like to sleep way too much.
Poor Sara Beth had to learn the hard and of course so did we. We let that sweet baby girl cry for 1 solid hour!!! I know we are mean and it was horrible to listen to. At one point (4:15 am) Wesley turned on the TV because there was no way we were going to sleep through that. She cried and said dadadada. I told her the next morning that maybe if she had said mamamama I would have come in there!!
Anyway to make a long story a little shorter Sara Beth has slept the past 2 nights for 10 hours straight!!! Amazing! I should write a book on my sleep method...no need to go 3 or 4 nights without sleep. You just need one really bad night. We did feel awful once I did a little research on the Ferber Sleep Method and realized what we "should have done" and we were fully prepared to try that on the next night, but like I said she learned her lesson the hard way! (Just like her mommy and daddy always do!)
Another thing we did this week was add a nice big flower bed to our back yard. We are so proud of it. It is not quite finished yet, but I thought I would post a picture of it anyway. Doc came up on Tuesday with his tiller and he and Wesley dug it up. Then on Wednesday Cheri helped us pick our plants and design the bed and Thursday and Friday we planted and added the stone border. We still have a few things to add that Doc and Cheri are going to transplant from their yard (Iris, Day Lillies, Crepe Myrtle...) So I'll have to post another picture once everything has been planted.
Working in a flower bed is my therapy and I have needed some major therapy after our sleepless nights!!HA!
Now that we are sleeping in our house we have MUCH happier babies!!
These are a few pictures in our Sunday best and yes that is the "new" flower bed in the background.
